New Challenges in English Education in Japan (Script)

1 introduction of myself

2 There are two reasons why I’m writing about this topic. One is I’m interested in how people usually learn English and the way is effective or not. The other reason is I want to develop my English learning by getting information about good points and bad points of English education in Japan.

3 It is echoed that English is important. Why? There are many foreigners coming to Japan as workers, tourists and so on and many of them can’t speak Japanese. We, Japanese people need to speak English to communicate with them. It is sooner to get latest information in English than in Japanese

4 In English education in Japan, we usually study English for 6 years at least from 1st year in junior high school to 3rd year in high school. The length of English learning tends to lengthen by starting at earlier age, for example, from 3rd year in elementary school.

5 Japanese people have one difficulty that is we are not good at output skills. We don’t speak well and write well either. It means we have difficulty communicating with other people in English.

6 In English education in Japan, grammar is recognized one of the important things to improve our English. Because much time is spent on grammar learning, we have few opportunities to learn speaking and writing.

7 Intensive reading and extensive reading are ways that capture attention as ways to improve language skills efficiently. Intensive reading is reading a book trying to understand contents completely with a dictionary and grammar book and extensive reading is to read a lot of books without any dictionary or grammar book.

8 English is used as a tool not only to get information but also to communicate with people. As one of the solutions to improve our output skills, a new examination is being developed and the number of oral class is increasing.

9 Yukichi Fukuzawa is one of the famous people in Japanese history. His picture is printed on 10000 yen note. He is a pioneer of English learning in Japan. He learned English to get information from Europe.

10 There are factors that make English learning of Japanese people slow. There are mainly two factors. One is we are shy. The other is being afraid of making mistakes.

11 TOEIC is one of the most popular English examinations both in Japan and Korea. That is used to show English ability especially when people want to get a job. English ability is scaled from 5 to 990 points.

12 Average scores of TOEIC in Japan is lower than Korea. Now, Korean companies are developing their businesses by making full use of English in global community. With the advent of the test, Korean people’s motivation increased. This factor caused the gap of average scores between Japan and Korea.

13 There is an action recently taken in English education in elementary school. A Japanese-native teacher teach English students with ALT. This system has already existed for a long time. However, recently teachers try to make the class more enjoyable by giving students opportunities to speak English with friends and an ALT.

14 Junior high school students are taught more advanced English than English taught in elementary school. English grammar is recognized as one of the most important things students improve and much time are given to study English grammar.

15In high school, students still learn English grammar to prepare for ‘center examination’ which is used as part of entrance examinations in Japan. The test mainly treats grammar knowledge.

16Too hard too much is an expression to show the current system of English education in Japan. Even though many students have difficulty understanding words that English native children use, they are forced to learn more difficult words.

17 Learning difficult words and phrases instead of learning basic words and phrases, people will be faced with a serious problem when they talk to other people in English.

18Tickle is one of the words that English native speakers learn at an early age. Through my experience, even though I’m a third year college student and have been learning English for 9 years, I had few opportunities to make contact with the word in English education, On the contrary, there is a word that high school students should know to pass difficult entrance examination of an university. The word is euthanasia that many native speakers may not see very often

Twilight corrected

This is first time to watch the movie titled Twilight, which is an American movie. It is a popular movie in Japan because characters are young men and women.

When I was younger, I often moved out and in because of my fathers's job,which required employees to move around Kyushu often. When I was seven, I first moved out of Yatsushiro in Kumamoto to Wada in Kagoshima. I missed the former place so much that it took really long time to get  used to the new place. After a stay for a year in Wada, I had to move back to Kumamoto but the place was not Yatsushiro but Kikuyou which is very close to the current  house. Because of some moves, I don't have any lifelong friends.  I could get an excellent ability which is probably the most important in the modern society, which is communication skill. I don't hesitate to talk to someone new to me any more and I can talk to them in a friendly fashion. The character in this movie looks shy and doesn't seem good at talking to someone new.

I watched this movie without any subtitles so I made full use of my listening skill. That's why I didn't understand the story completely. The story begins with a woman's entrance to a new place and school. She found a man who or which is a vampire. She doesn't like him but her feelings change little by little and next story comes. There are a lot of other scenes which people can enjoy without understanding of what the characters say.

It was difficult for me to listen to every word that the characters say but I could understand the flow of the story. I want to watch the next sequel. I think those who don't study English can understand the flow of the story like me.

I watched a movie titled Drumline which is an American movie
and features a main character who has confidence in his drum skill and band of an University in America. The main character is a kind of difficult student to deal with by teachers and senior students. He likes to play the drum and is good at playing it.

The movies starts from a scene where the main character graduates from his
high school. As understandable from the scene, he is very unique. Even though
he is going to graduate from his school, he is playing the drum in the graduation

The movie mainly features music but this movie features other aspects of university life that ordinary university university students experience. One of the things are students lifestyle. I think lifestyle in university has many aspects. In this film, the main character struggle with people to communicate. First, he doesn't try to follow rules and respect his senior students. The thing that he doesn't respect is like the personality I have and I have to change it.

Finally, this movie is so impressive that I want my friends to watch the movie even though I had thought this movie is just a music movie before I watched.

I don't like to go travelling and I think travelling is a kind of time-
consuming thing. I also think I can experience the same feeling as travelling
by watching movies. I like to watch movies. I can't often watch movies recently
though. Today,I watched a movie named Up. The title is totally different from
the Japanese version　The name of Japanese version is A Flying House of
Uncle Curl if translated in English I guess. Because of the difference, it was
difficult for me to find the name in English on the internet.

In this movie, there are two characters mainly. Two are couple. They knew each
other from young age. They had a same dream from the time when they were
children. The dream was to going to a place which is far away from their house
but they were dreaming that they can go someday. After they saw each other,
their life story goes so quickly. Even though life is usually year-long, this movie
tells their life story with just minutes. But I was moved by the scenes the most in
this film.

I often think about the future recently and I wonder I can marry, have children,
get a job. I want to escape from the real whenever I think about such things.
If I could kill myself now, I wouldn't have to do anything whatever I don't want
to do. I couldn't experience things enjoyable happening in the future though.
This movie reminded me of the memories of mine. Looking back to the when
I was younger, there were many things I didn't want to experience but there
were also many I though they were good to experience. One of my memories
I want to forget the most is my junior high school life. At that time, I couldn't
catch up with many classes expect for Physical Education　I let my parents
and teachers down. I hated myself so much. The time was the worst time I have
ever experienced and I wouldn't want to back to the time even if I could.

This movie was good movie. I want my friends to watch this movie and think
about themselves. I was happy to have watched it with a simple reason why I
watched.

What to do

There are some things I have to do. I know 'some things' are not many things and I think I can handle them quickly if I work hard.However, all of people, not only me have a tendency to become lazy when we don't have to do things that don't require to finish in the near future

When I was an elementary school student, I went out almost everyday to enjoy swimming, fishing, and hanging around with my friends during summer vacation. I could make various memories. Even though I could get materials to write about, I really hesitated to write a diary. On the last day of summer vacation every year, I tried hard to remember what I did during summer vacation and could finish 40-days diary. This case is probably applicable to my personality, so I would like to talk another story of people's laziness.

There are international students in KGU. Some of them are very eager to study Japanese. Once they receive an assignment, they do it by themselves and ask a Japanese to check their answers. They usually finish assignments on time, while other international students won't do homework until the day before they have to hand it to their teacher. I don't think the latter case of exchange students are lazy because they finish in time for deadline.

What I want to say in this post is that I want people not to recognize other people as being lazy just with a fact that they don't finish homework on time.

My favorite time in one day

My favorite time in one day is morning. Every time I get up in the morning, I feel hungry. After I eat breakfast, I feel really happy and go to KGU or play soccer outside almost every day. In the morning, I can eat meals as many as possible because I exercise or study hard afterwards. Also, in the morning there are many people who active and talk to me friendly. Some days ago, I went to KGU library and saw some librarians. They usually talk to in a way that I feel uncomfortable to hear and hesitate to response,but at that time, they said hi actively. I was surprised and said hi actively, too. It is difficult to see things at night and it is likely that the number of crimes are more

than in the morning. On the contrary to the bad thing, people can spend safely in the morning.

My favorite animal

My favorite animal is dogs. There are many kinds of dogs in the world. Even though I haven't seen all of kinds of dogs, all of kinds of dogs I have seen both directly and on television are very pretty and attractive. When I was a first year student in an elementary school, I read a book in which there are many world records. Some of them are related to dogs. For example, biggest dog in the world, smallest dog in the world like these. Records are introduced with pictures. Since I read the book, I have found the biggest dog at pet shops I go. However, I have never found the dog there. Probably, I will not see it there forever. Also, I have a dog in my house, which is called Love. The name comes from Labrador of Lab which changed to Love. I don't walk the dog often, but I like the dog.

My favorite teacher is a teacher, who teach me to solve my problems, not solve my problems. I have ever been taught from many teachers since I joined an elementary school. I hate some of them because they don't try to make what they say understood and they just told me about contents on textbooks by reading aloud. However, I like almost all of the professors of KGU. They often give advice,but they don't talk to me for a long time. I consider how to solve my problems with their advice. It helps me to grow up and recently I can think express my opinions little by little. If I don't have such teachers, I wouldn't be able to get credits I have ever gotten in KGU. Probably, I will ask professors when I have problems,but I will not try to ask them deep.

My favorite application

I have ever used iPhone for almost a half year and used some applications. My favorite application is Eijiro. Eijiro was originally made on the internet. It is an internet-based dictionary. When I want to know the meaning of words, the website offers detailed explanations and example sentences. After I see the result of words I don't know, I remember them easily because of those services. The dictionary is offered as an application for free. Soon after I bought an iPhone, I downloaded the application. Although the application doesn't offer full services that are offered on the internet version of Eijiro, with the application, I can easily look up words that I can't understand even after I use an electrical dictionary. Applications for iPhone are often updated and meet our satisfaction. I hope that Eijiro is updated to make it easier to use in the near future.

My favorite thing I often have in my pocket

There are some things I often have in my pocket. One of my favorite thing I have is iPhone. It is very useful. I couldn't have imagined a few years ago that I have it now. It has a variety of functions that it originally has. In addition, iPhone users can add more functions by downloading applications from App store. Many of the applications offered are free. If people want to study English, they can study with iPhone. In the case of improving listening skill, people can download music files on iTunes, some of which are free. They can also get files to improve listening skill by just utilizing internet. Because iPhone is a kind of smartphone, it allows people to view websites for personal computer users. People can get a lot of files and scripts of the files for free on the websites. I want to know how to use iPhone more.

My favorite website is Amazon. Amazon is a giant company and offers a variety of items from foods to appliances. When I want to buy books, I always use the site. The site offers free shipment and quick service. Almost ll of the items I have ordered arrived at my house within a few days after I ordered. Amazon company also offers a product which is used to read e-books. The product is very attractive to me. The product can be used as an English tool. Because Amazon company originally started from the US, people can use American version of Amazon which also helps me to study English reading reviews and explanations. In the future, I want to order Kindle by using American version Amazon with my English. I want to work for Amazon company if possible after I graduate.

My favorite shoes

Some people, especially young Japanese tend to like to wear boots, while other Japanese people like to wear sports shoes. In my case, I like to wear sports shoes. I have some pairs of boots,but I have never felt comfortable when I wear them. On the other hand, sports shoes are very good. They are less fashionable than boots apparently. However, sports shoes have greater advantages offsetting the disadvantage. When I have to run to go somewhere to attend an important event, I can't run fast with boots,but I can run with shoes. I have had many experiences that I'm grateful to myself for wearing sports shoes many times. Sports shoes I have recently found in a shoes shop were fashionable. I wanted to get them but they were very expensive. I hope sports shoes become more fashionable and cheaper.

My favorite color

My favorite is black. When I buy clothing, I tend to choose black-colored clothing because I don't have to care about it too much when I hang out and go to a restaurant. If I wear a white-colored t-shirt when I eat dinner. I can't eat comfortable and maybe feel tired afterward. Black also has a good point. When I feel chilly outside but it is sunny, in that case, black color tends to collect light and heat at the same time,so I feel slightly warm even when I don't exercise. I think black color has a good effect for women. When they make up, they use a certain cosmetic to highlight their good part of their face. The way is to hide bad parts by make them black and women look thinner.

I have ever watched some movies, not a loot of movies in my life and one of the my favorite movie is Spider man series. The main character has a special skill which as the title shows, he can move with sticky strings putting out from his both hands. He is a kind of shy boy and he is not good at talking to girls, but he likes a neighborhood girl, who is beautiful woman. One of the most favorite scene is an action scene in which many people are in danger and spider man is also in danger. Finally, he helps all of them. My favorite class

Because I am not good at writing, I don't like to write in both English and Japanese. However, I like to take writing class. In the class, I can write about any topics I want to write. That's why I worked hard on the class last semester,but I couldn't get the degree. This seems unfortunate for me at first glance, but I'm NOT disappointed with my English at all and because of additional opportunity to take that class again, I can improve writing skill more and I will be able to pass Eiken 1st in the near future. I think I have to work on typing homework more eagerly to come to be able to enjoy writing. Also, I should know how to write English sentences logically. My favorite high school memory

I spent so boring high school life in Shoyo high school three years ago that I don't remember a lot of favorite memories there, but I have some memories. Because I was separated into a certain department,like universities education system offers, I had to be with twenty or thirty students for three years. During that time, I couldn't be friends with them and I tried to make friends in other departments. Other department's students were really friendly and kind to me and talked a lot. We had some common subjects to talk. Because of that, I didn't feel alone even when I take some classes alone. One favorite moment is to cooperate with some friends to complete a group project.

My favorite phrase in English I have ever heard is 'you never know what you can do till you try'. This phrase has helped me many times. When I was faced with many problems about English, I remembered the phrase and said in my mind repeatedly. Also, when I was a first-year university student, I asked a senior student about how to get high score on a TOEIC test and he said that the score I said and wanted to get is too high for me to get. I was really shocked by his words and almost cried but then I remembered the phrase again. The phrase encourages me to study. My favorite dessert

My favorite dessert is ice creams. They are usually seasoned dessert,but they aren't for me. I often eat them recently. I like them so much that I eat two or three of them every day. They sometimes cause stomachache. It is really annoying and interfere with my happy moment. If possible, I want to eat fried ice creams which are famous in a prefecture in Japan. I have ever heard how to make them,but it is really difficult for laymen to do so. I think I have to pay much money to eat them. Because ice creams make my stomach really painful, I don't have good memories with ice creams. My favourite place

My favorite place is KGU. KGU offers many things to do. When I want to eat or drink something, I can go to cafeteria or bakery. When I need to buy stationery, I go to maruzen and buy them. Also, I can study at many places, like empty classrooms, library, and English lounge. English lounge is probably the best place to study English. If I want to practice to speak, I can practice by talking to international students from Canada, the US, and the UK. In the place, we can communicate with each other in some kinds of languages. Some people speak Japanese or English,while other people speak Chinese or Korean. Many interesting people come there. I think people who want to study English should go there. 128 words (818 words)

My favourite thing to do

My favorite to do is to hang out with my friends. Because I am a university student, I don't have much free time and I have to concentrate on my study, whenever I have free time I hang out with my friends, Mitsuki, Tukaji and sometimes Sirakado. Their schedule is very flexible. When I ask them to go somewhere, they often say yes. Because of their schedule flexibility, I can have enjoyable time with friends. I think I have to think about other people schedules and decide when we hang out. When we have free time, we play soccer very hard so that we get our weight down to keep our body healthy. Something special I did during vacation

I don't like to go somewhere fur from my house because it takes long to go home. It causes me to stop studying, but I went to Fukuoka the other day. Before summer vacation started, one of my close friends told me she wanted to go to Fukuoka to go shopping. We also went there last year same season. She really likes to go shopping and I often wait for it so long time that I sit somewhere and read a book. It is enjoyable for me to go somewhere with her because I don7t have to care about anything. What all I have to do with her is just talk to her and smile. I went to some shops and some clothes. Good and bad points about summer

I think there are many bad points about summer,but they offer us points which make us think summer is the good season. In summer, people don't want to go outside because it is too hot to enjoy something outside. Because of that, people notice how important an air conditioner is. Fireworks are also good point in summer. Japanese people don't often see fireworks in winter. However we can see them in summer. If there is not summer in the seasons of Japan, we may not be able to see fireworks. That's why I think summer has both good points and bad points. 106 words (425 words)

Typing Homework 3 How I Study during Summer Vacation

Before this summer vacation started, I had already decided what I study for and I've recently been interested in economics. The way I study in very simple. I listen to music to improve listening skill and I read a lot to understand English quickly and deeply and I write as much as possible to sophisticate my writing. The easiest way to improve speaking skill is ,I think, to communicate with people in English. I will go to the residence hall of KGU some time during summer vacation. Though I know somehow how to study English, I don't know much about how to study economics. If possible, I want to study the subject in English.

Typing homework 1 Vacation Plans

There are many things which attract me during summer vacation,but I have to do many things especially this summer vacation. First, I have to study English for Eiken 1st, the highest level of that examination which is famous for Japanese English learners and many of them take it. Essay 2-02a: Robin Hood

Probably many people recognize Robin Hood as a famous person, but the origin of
it is from an animal, a fox that work with, a bear, Little John.
Little John is good at stealing many things from the rich. After that
he gives them to the poor. Because of his actions, he is regarded as a
hero by the poor, while he is regarded as annoying bear by the
rich.There is a reason why they are good at stealing money. It is
because they are also good at disguising.

One day,  he steals something worthy from a king who loves money very
much. The king rules a place in which people are forced to pay much
money and it makes them difficult to live. While they are struggling to
live in the severe environment, Little John and Robin Hood appear to
help them. Robin Hood pretend to be a augur, who stares at someone’s
hands and say their future. While he pretends, he steals much money and
distribute money around the town. Little John also works as a guardman
of Robin Hood. As a result, it makes people happy and the king
annoyed.

There was a very cute girl in a castle. Her name was Marian which was also
fox. She and Robin Hood loved each other  for a long time. They couldn’t
see for a long period. That’s why she felt that he didn’t love her or
forget her existence, but it was not true and he loved her. Marian had a
close friend, Crack which supported their lovely relationship.

One day, Robin Hood heard about a rumor that a shooting competition had
been going to be held. As a result, he could attend it and win. This
competition was held to attract him by King who hated Robin.The king
knew that Robin would win the competition before it was held and he
tried to catch Robin after the competition,but He could escape from the
king because of support of many people who lived in the country and
loved Robin.

Robin’s action reminded me of a phrase said by Mother Teresa. She said: ‘if
you want to be loved, you have to love. This phrase is applicable to
his action. Actually, he didn’t hope that he was loved,but he was nice
and as a result he was loved and he made many people happy. When he was
in danger, he was helped by many people who loved or were grateful for
Robin’s action. Robin did something morally right but he did something
illegally wrong. That’s why I can decide whether what  he did is cool
or not. 

Totally, I like this movie. I could learn about something I didn’t know and
remind me of what justice is. Recently, I am studying the UN. The UN
stands for the united nations which is one of the biggest organization
to keep the world piece. I think the UN seems similar to Robin’s action
because the organization tries to help many people improve their
lifestyle and other many things,but there is a totally different point
between the UN and Robin’s action which is that he did something for
many people with courage and he didn’t expect any return from them,while
the UN try to help people and developed countries develop more and
earn more money. I sometimes forget what is right and wrong morally. I
think I should do something morally right even it is thought to be bad
from the vision of many people. I recommend that many people should
watch this movie. Especially I want  this movie be watched by teenagers
like me. Teenagers have lived more than ten years and they have some
opinions about what justice is. This movie gives them an opportunity to
consider it gain.

I think I used some kinds of English for this semester's assignment. When I wrote BRs, I tried to write them as easy as possible because there is a simple reason which is in order for myself and readers to understand smoothly. It is very helpful for me to review my grammar skill. This is important to improve writing skill. Writing BRs made me understand how to introduce books in order to attract readers.

During this semester especially summer vacation, I tried to post some essays in which I typed more than 700 words. This was my goal to do each day of summer vacation. Although it made me  really annoyed to spend summer vacation, when I was satisfied with the amount of words I had written, I felt nostalgic to work on blogging hard. It was interesting to look for topics to post such long essays. At fast, I didn't have nothing to write about. The more time spent, the more I noticed that news around me happens all the time. Before I wrote articles with such a aim, I hesitated to write something I want to write in English, now I am becoming not to hesitate to do so.

In English learning, it is essential to write. It is inevitable to output ability with speaking or writing. Writing is one of output ways, but this is totally different from the other. I think I made full use of this opportunity to write some various kinds of English essays.

BR2-18: Marty and the Magazine

Have you even done something illegal? I think most of the readers of this blog will say 'no'. In my case, the answer is also 'no'. When I was a junior high school student, I often used to go to one of my friends' house which is located nearby my house. He doesn't live there now though. One day, I went there as usual. He was there and I tried to ask him to do something fun, but unfortunately we couldn't find anything fun. Finally, he suggested that we try to buy a box of cigarette to smoke. I couldn't believe what he said. He was not the like. He was a kind of ideal person for his parents. I thought we would let our parents down if we had smoked. I stopped him from trying to buy it.

In this book's story, what I above is similar. it is really hard for people to stop friends from doing something wrong but important for them to be safe. 

I want you to read this book in the future. I expect you to get something important from this book.

BR2-17: BATTLE of the BANDS

When I was younger, I have eagerness to try to compete something with other people.

I think it made me really strong and grow up. When I was a 6 year-old boy, I often ran with my friends to compete. It was interesting and the most important thing I did during that time.

This book's story tell us what competition is and reminds us of how eager we were when we were young. In this story, characters compete rendition of rock and roll which is mysterious for me. Even though rock and roll is hard music without competition, they compete their performance of it. Needless to say, it is so noisy and fun for some people.

All of people have at least one  experience to compete with someone ,for example, brothers, friends, parents, or even teachers. It absolutely makes us better and is helpful in the future.
